High School DxD New fanservice compilation

You have to hand it to DxD, it’s not only one of the better fanservice vehicles of all time, but it actually managed to feel like a real anime while doing it.  That’s not easy to pull off.

Thoughts on the anime

High School DxD New was far and away the most commercially successful ecchi series of 2013, and its 2012 predecessor High School DxD would have held the same distinction if not for being edged out narrowly by the ecchi masterpiece that was To Love-Ru Darkness.

In a genre where both open acceptance and sales power are notoriously hard to come by, High School DxD stands as one of the rarest of it’s kind, an ecchi series that actually has a little bit of “cool” factor going for it. For an anime that essentially serves equally as softcore porn as it does for entertainment, that is a remarkable accomplishment.

This is in stark contrast to the rest of the ecchi genre, which seems to pride itself on being a little extra weird.  Hence the name, which is a reference to the letter “H”, which is itself a reference to the word “hentai,” a word that means both “pervert” and “weirdo.”  The root word, “hen”, means weird/strange.

I needn’t tell you that most ecchi is well suited to its namesake.  Rubbing boobs to power up mechas, sucking a milk-like substance out of breasts to gain powers, or girls slashing at each other to magically steal bust size, we’ve seen all of this and more from ecchi series over the last few years.  And shit, those were the good ones.

Just by showing something as innocuous as female nipples, people usually become uncomfortable. The implied intimacy of such a thing makes a lot of people uncomfortable due to how we’ve been conditioned by society, and when people become uncomfortable you won’t have to look very long for backlash and stigmas to be created.  Though there are sometimes exceptions (the cultural icon status of Ron Jeremy and Jenna Jameson, or the massive following of Game of Thrones), most people hide their porn collections and while almost everyone has porn or sexual materials of some kind, we politely assume the opposite is true when in the company of others.

Therefore, there aren’t a lot of people who would have titles like Breast Obsessed 3 or The Texas Vibrator Massacre proudly displayed in their home movie collections (unless, perhaps, you happen to be Hideki Matsui).  Even though porn is hardly unfamiliar to almost any of us, it’s as if we are supposed to pretend it is while amongst other people.

As such, there is an obstacle for anime collectors when deciding if they want to purchase ecchi or not.  Even if they like the anime, are they okay with the image that comes with displaying such material?  This is probably why so few ecchi have thrived during the TV nudity boom of the last few years.  And it means only the most exceptional and mainstream friendly series are likely to find success.  High School DxD has found success because it did just enough to feel like a real anime, while still fulfilling it’s main purpose as fap material.

With that in mind, most ecchi is basically softcore porn, with an anime twist.  The non-nude ecchi series are like Maxim, the nude series are like Playboy.  Those magazines actually have some talented minds writing for them, and in fact when you open a Playboy you’ll only find boobs on maybe 25% of the pages.  And yet, that 25% completely shapes the image of the magazine.  Ecchi is the same thing.  Even in the thirstiest of ecchi series, boobs are only on the screen maybe 10% of the time.  Yet, if you display Ikkitousen amongst your collection, most people won’t think of the action scenes or the Romance of The Three Kingdoms references.  They’ll think of the fappable things that show did here and there.  And this is exactly what most ecchi series strive for.

I think if you proudly display a blatant ecchi series in your collection it shows you have tremendous image security.  Either that or you just don’t care about self-image in the first place.  Maybe this is why most ecchi are so over the top.  They’ve given up on trying to overcome the anti-pornography cultural stigma, so why not race to the other side of the spectrum and try to win favor there amongst those who are less effected by cultural pressures?

What makes the High School DxD franchise so unique is that it is one of the most fappable animes ever made and yet they didn’t give up on trying to appeal themselves to a mainstream audience.  The music is both well produced and catchy, the character designs and art look great, many of the characters feel three dimensional and the whole production just fits together in a professionally crafted manner.  This is a series that puts having fun above everything else, and it’s easier to accept it when a series crosses the line sexually if it makes doing so feel fun.

For other companies, emulating DxD won’t be easy, but I do believe it has given the ecchi genre that elusive blueprint for financial success.  Make a show charming enough, and people will start to get over the sexual stigmas put on us by society more easily.

Thoughts on the fanservice video

Pretty much the normal edit, except this time I added a few extra things.

The TV series had two openings, but they recycled many of the same clips so putting both in the video as is would have felt silly.  Instead, I remade the second opening by adding the most fanservice relevant clips from the first opening to it and attempting to match them to the music as much as possible.

As far as I know, none of the original series BD rips came with scans, but DxD New did, and they were quite nice.  Usually I compile the eyecatches together in the middle of a video, but this time I also added the scans in that area with accompanying music from the anime.

At the tail end of the nude fanservice section I added a special extra compilation for all the sideways-tilted shots this show loved to use.  Turn your screen (or phone) on its side for some epically tall nude shots.

Favorite Character

Akeno takes the top spot in this season, though there isn’t a character in this show who isn’t super-hot and easy to like.  In future episodes it would be nice to see way more of Leviathan, that girl from school with the glasses, and the villain chick with the tape “X”s on her nips.  All great characters, all vastly underutilized.
