Thoughts on the anime
This series has never been about story and always been about fanservice and characters that are two dimensional both literally and figuratively.
The objective of this anime has always been crystal clear, and the latest OVA entries accomplish it about as well as could be hoped.
The new characters are fun I guess, but I don’t think either one would be among my five favorites from this series. The Senhime figurine and concept art looked so promising, but I don’t think they really had the budget here to do her character justice.
This OVA was a mostly positive experience, but it is a little bit of a bummer that the visual quality has taken a serious dive in comparison to the two preceding TV series which both had strong production values. And this makes complete sense, given how the Samurai Bride anime dealt with unexpectedly mediocre sales.
Like the Vanquished Queens OVA (by Hoods), the art quality just didn’t do justice to the material. If you want an anime to be nothing but eye-candy, then there is a certain level of art quality that you can’t afford to drop below.
ARMS has been in a major slump ever since Samurai Bride. Each new series has been a financial disappointment, and the next series after looks a little worse than the one that preceded it. You have to be impressed that ARMS is still alive despite all these failures, somehow they have found a way to soldier on.
ARMS seems to be going all in on Valkyrie Drive. Hopefully it can create a resurgence.
As far as the Samurai Girls franchise, I wouldn’t rule out further OVA titles so long as Hobby Japan is helping to finance. But we can probably bet against another full length TV series.
Thoughts on the fanservice video
Like most ARMS series, even horrible anime can turn into surprisingly good compilations. ARMS knows how to give the fans what they want.
Something about the way they handled the first person ‘waifu’ style specials was creepy, but I think the idea has some potential. The second seemed a lot less creepy than the first – I think if they made six of these instead of two they would have gotten pretty good by the end.
In theory it should be ‘Sadistic Succubus’ Senhime based on how good her figurine looks. But since they kind of botched her character art and gave us little reason to remember her, I think I’ll give the nod to Charles d’Artanian. She had the good sense to get tied up and show off her boobs a LOT in the second OVA. We probably see her boobs more in this OVA than we did in the previous two seasons combined.
