This according to an advertisement from the final page of the latest Prison School manga chapter.
This snaps what is probably one of the longest non-nude streaks by an anime company in recent memory. JC Staff used to be fairly comfortable with nude material, even doing a small number of hentai projects in the 80s and 90s. But that came to a quiet end after producing 2004’s Maburaho , with the company completely avoiding nudity after that point. Until now.
I don’t think that JC Staff is a prudish company, but I think this streak was likely a business decision, with the company feeling the need to avoid risks. In an industry and culture where risk taking can be seen as reckless or selfish, and most of the highest selling anime are just like all the highest selling anime that came before them, I don’t blame them for playing things safe.
But it’s always nicer to see an anime and a company that takes a chance. We should all be willing to leave our comfort zone every once in a while. Kudos to JC Staff for doing exactly that and staying 100% true to the spirit of a classic manga.
