Winter 2017 ecchi preview: Fanservice Hibernation

Last winter was the weakest fanservice season in over a decade, but this upcoming Winter season has found a way to be even worse.

Series not worth expecting anything from, but should be mentioned anyway

Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 2

Studio Deen

The first season had plenty of safe-for-work level fanservice, so it’s likely the sequel will do the same.

Kuzu no Honkai

Lerche

Kuzu no Honkai is a romance story with plenty of adult situations.  The manga flirts with the idea of nudity but never quite goes there.  I wouldn’t expect the anime to be any different, though with Lerche handling production a pleasant surprise can never be ruled out completely.

Fuuka

Diomedéa

Kouji Seo loves to draw nudity in many of his manga, unfortunately Fuuka is not one of them.  Fanservice is always on the menu, regardless.

Akiba’s Trip The Animation

Gonzo

Alternately referred to as Akiba Strip.  This anime is based on a popular playstation game and very unlikely to deliver nudity, yet Akiba’s Trip is probably still going to be the best fanservice anime of the season.  For those unfamiliar, Akiba’s Trip is a game that mostly involves beating the clothes off of your opponents.

The production values actually look pretty good, especially for Gonzo which hasn’t had much budgeting for their work in a long time.

Schoolgirl Strikers

J.C. Staff

One of many original anime this season, I can’t really tell you much about this series, other than the fact that it seems to be borrowing from the Strike Witches style of motif.  Hopefully, that means more fanservice than Brave Witches or Kantai Collection.

Chao You Shijie: Being the Reality

Tencent Animation (yes that really is their name)

Translated as “WORLD OF SUPER SAND BOX”, this is based off a fairly standard shonen style Manhua (chinese manga) that in terms of fanservice, compares decently well to something like Fairy Tail.  Lots of girls in bikinis, that kind of thing.

Overall thoughts on the Winter 2017 season

The last time an anime season went completely without nudity was 15 years ago, in the Winter 2002 season.  For a while, it look like that streak snapped last year during a brutally bad winter 2016 season, but some surprise additions on Luck and Logic’s blu-ray kept the streak alive.

I guess you could count Strike the Blood II as being kinda sorta being part of this season, so I suppose the streak could continue a while longer still, albeit with an asterisk.

2016 was the most disappointing year for fanservice in a long time, and 2017 isn’t looking any better, though release date announcements for 7 Sins and DxD season 4 could certainly give the year a huge boost.
