Let’s do a fanservice review of Fairy Tail OVA 01, shall we?
By popular demand! Fapservice originally had no plans to review Fairy Tail even though it kept coming up in the comments. A triple whammy of being shōnen, the TV show having way too many episodes to review and the OVAs being DVD only… But the Fairy Tail OVAs have more fanservice that many recent shows in this epic ecchi drought and I was finally able to track down some HQ DVD video sources, so we are going to be doing fanservice reviews of the Fairy Tail OVAs, one OVA at a time. True story. Fairy Tail OVA 01 is what got me hooked on Fairy Tail in the first place. Too shōnen and too long for my tastes. I really hate it when great girls get shoved aside to let baka boys hog the limelight which happens in far too many shōnen shows. Plus I like to be able to re-watch anime shows that I really like and with the TV series now at 175 episodes, that just isn’t practical. But I kept hearing how great the Fairy Tail girls were and how it had more fanservice than most shōnen shows did (and how shōnen fanboys complained about the fanservice). So I decided to give at least Fairy Tail OVA 01 a try and that’s all it took. Then I looked up the viewing order online and slowly but surely watched all of Fairy Tail in that order until I was caught up. Worth it. Completely.

Story 1: The Fairy Tail mage guild member Lucy comes across a mysterious written request on an odd-job noticeboard. The client is looking for an object that is hidden somewhere in Fairy Tail’s female dormitory, Fairy Hills. To verify the request, Lucy visits Fairy Hills, and discovers that the client is Hilda, the dormitory head who is looking for a shining treasure. OVA 01
Fanservice-wise, the themes of Fairy Tail OVA 01 seem to be Lucy’s boobs, Erza’s ass and a healthy does of onsen and swimsuit service of all the girls to go along with random fanservice here and there.
No better way to start a show than a closeup of Lucy’s large assets… Too bad it’s DVD instead of HD and too bad it’s zoomed in too far for the native resolution. But still fun…

Yes, Erza really is crying. Fairy Tail OVA 01 manages to pull off a sad but sweet ending. Nicely done…
Omake
There’s a ton of omake for Fairy Tail. And for good reason too. Plus some really talented artists doing fan art. Since the OVAs are DVD only, I wanted to focus on HD (or higher) + HQ images. Didn’t see any anime posters, so I included some of my HD stitches from the TV show since that’s not likely to be reviewed due to the sheer number of episodes. Feel free to add your favorite Fairy Tail omake to the comments.

Good End. Heartwarming and funny. Nice step up in fanservice from the TV show.
It’s a crying shame that Fairy Tail OVAs have only been released on DVD and never on BD. Fairy Tail deserves better. I looked for and could not get the HDTV fansubs for OVAs 01 & 02 from years ago. But to be honest, having worked with the DVDs, I’m not sure the original art was done in 720p to start with. Doesn’t make sense but, for example, zooms in the DVD release looked coarser than they should have.
As I mentioned at the beginning, Fairy Tail OVA 01 is what got me hooked in Fairy Tail in the first place after deliberately avoiding it for years. So I’m partial to this OVA. I wound up making a lot more stitches (almost 50) and webms (almost 40) than I thought I would for a 30-minite episode. Do check out my albums since a lot of what I made is not included in this review. I did enjoy making stitches and webms for this OVA.
I’m also partial to Lucy Heartfilia so it was tempting for me to make even more stitches, webms and snapshots than I did. Lucy is the best girl in Fairy Tail IMO and still one of the best chubby girl designs that I have seen. Boobs that would look way too big on most girls look great on Lucy. For me, having Lucy dressed in a skimpy cat princess outfit for most of the episode was a stroke of genius.
Fairy Tail OVA 01, other than being DVD only, is made the way OVAs of popular TV shows should be made. Namely, doing something that the TV show won’t or can’t do. In this case, that’s fanservice on a great group of girls that don’t get pushed aside by baka boys. There are baka boys in Fairy Tail but they don’t get to hog the limelight for too long (except maybe Natsu at the end of a few story arcs). It’s a shame that the OVA isn’t even more ecchi than it was but it’s still a big improvement over the TV show which is the important part.
So yeah, no nudity in Fairy Tail and probably never will be. But still the fanservice on a great group of girls is better than the fanservice of most shows currently airing in this epic ecchi drought. If your are an ecchi fan and haven’t watched Fairy Tail yet and 175 episodes seems like way too much to watch, do check out the OVAs at least. That’s where the most fanservice is anyway. The TV show does have some fanservice but it’s even milder and really spread out.
Notes
The bad news is that I was not able to track down the HDTV fansubs for FT OVA 01 & 02. But only the first two episodes were shown on HDTV it seems. So OVAs 01, 02 and 03 are only 480p. The good news is that in tracking down fansubs with the best HQ and best bitrate that I could, I found a later version of a popular fansub that has 576p instead of 480p for OVAs 04, 05 & 06.
