We’re baaack with fanservice reviews for Gate S2. Better late than never. Sorry about that but Gate reviews got delayed by low fanservice levels (after episode 13) and higher priority shows such as Galko-chan, Grimgar and Konosuba.
Episode 22
Villians who can use mind control. *sigh*. Shandy is such a loli. And such an idiot. And Princess Pina in chains makes for sad times…
Episode 23
Poor Princess Pina in chains. Gotta think that much better times are ahead though. We get to see Amazon Bird Girl Whore again. Nice. But that bad bunny girl – such a hot bod with such a vicious personality. Fortunately, most of the good guys make their escape…
Still think Mari is the prettiest girl in Gate anime. More of Princess Pina in chains before she gets rescued. Princess Pina has nice legs. Yao gets to use her heavy objects for a tactical advantage. Too bad we don’t get to see more of them. Princess Pina gets rescued. Don’t blink or you’ll miss the tiny sliver of a panty shot from Lelei which IIRC is the only one in all the official art I have seen. Lelei has a nice ass. Rory has nice thighs. Princess Pina gets rescued, becomes Empress Pina and gets to be sexy in a good way. Some way overdue Type B stuff. And the “harem” sets Itami straight at the very end. Good End.
If you squint, you can see just a tiny sliver of Lelei’s panties. IIRC, this is the only time in all the official art I have seen including the manga. Seems like the official art avoids fanservice of Lelei outside of swimsuits and bath secenes with lots of soap and murky water….
This Type B stuff in the epilogue was amusing. Just wish there had been more of it during the anime…

Gate came out with a number of nice promo posters around the time S2 was airing. Here are the last of them. Panties FTW! Too bad we didn’t see more than a brief flash of Rory and Lelei panties in the anime…

Overall
The bad news is a number of Gate BDs from have been released so far but none have had any nudity. Unfortunately, I called it in my earlier reviews. It’s A-1 Pictures after all. Not impossible, just improbable and only in small amounts (Magi and Vividred Operation).
So what happened to the fanservice in Gate S2? Long story short is that Gate has gone mainstream on us. And it seems to be successful as a mainstream anime so don’t expect them to feel any pressure to add nudity even on BDs.
Overall, I have slightly mixed feelings about Gate the anime. The manga was better if you can tolerate the more graphic (and barbaric) material. But the anime was very good, even excellent. IMO Gate was the best show that aired last season. But it made me a bit sad seeing so many opportunities for mild fanservice passed up even though Princess Pina bathing scenes were nice. But what about the other girls? And for some reason, I prefered the harem when it didn’t act like a harem so having that change for one episode out of 24 seemed a bit out of place. And for setting up such great Type B characters, especially the main girls, then turning full bore into a Type A show. But Gate pulled it off. Going from Type B to Type A and actually doing a very good job of it. Nice. Other shows tried that last season and failed. The odds are low. Give credit to the creators and the source material for being able to pull it off. Last but not least, pulling off a Good End after 24 episodes is not easy. Good job. Here’s hoping that there will be more Gate in the future although I tend to think there won’t be. Hope I’m wrong… Regardless, I enjoyed the ride and a great group of fantasy girls – harem or not a harem…
