The second half of this series is almost totally fanservice free, instead focusing on drama and action.

Episode twelve had a grisly censored sex scene, or at least as much is implied. There were also some oddly timed pantyshot moments during some of the anime’s most dramatic material.
All this occurs during Amane’s backstory episode, which struck me as stereotypically anime (convoluted and silly). It was still somehow compelling anyway, and the series ends in a way that at least held interest.
The end of the 13th episode has a cliffhanger that almost feels as if it was taken straight out of Jormungand or Black Lagoon . Adaptations for the remainder of the Grisaia trilogy are announced after the credits roll. This strongly implies that the follow-ups will also be 8 bit productions.
While the fanservice level fell off a cliff in the final six episodes, it’s hard to be too upset since this was a much better anime than the usual stuff fanservice fans have to sit through.
I wasn’t the biggest fan of 8 bit a few months ago, but this effort has substantially raised my opinion of their work and potential. I haven’t experienced the VN versions, but coming from such a perspective I thought this anime was surprisingly well made.
