Musaigen no Phantom World Fanservice Review Episode 01

PW (123)
Musaigen no Phantom World is a new anime airing this season by Kyoto Animation.

The synopsis according to the official site:

In the near future, spirits and monsters are in full sight. A boy leads a group of people with special abilities as they plot against a massive organization that takes advantage of a certain incident and eventually know the truth about their world in the process.

Surprisingly, our protagonist, Haruhiko Ichijo, has something of a personality. He’s a bit of a book worm, self-aware, and generally knowledgeable about what he’s doing. Not much so far, but better than what we usually get. Unsurprisingly, even though he is aware of harem comedy tropes and tries to avoid them, KyoAni couldn’t help themselves and had him fall into one anyways. The other protagonist is Mai Kawakami and at first I was worried she would just be a another tsundere, but there are hints she has other things going on in her life beside always being with our MC. This combined with the description of a “certain incident” in the synopsis means we should also get a decent story out of this show.

For a KyoAni show, the fanservice was anything but lacking. This may in fact turn out to be the most fanservice-y show this season. As we saw in Wizards Winter Preview, this season is very lacking overall in terms of ecchi content. Fortunately, this episode had breast physics like we haven’t seen since High School of the Dead and so let’s hope that a good indicator for things to come. Oh, and Mai apparently has to grope herself to fight these phantoms. Because why not. For whatever reason this first episode also made me think of Kyoukai no Kanata, another KyoAni show, if they dialed back the plot and ramped up the PLOT with typical harem tropes.

Phantom World is based on a Light Novel and word is that the limbo scene is anime original. If High School of the Dead was the inspiration for that limbo scene, I can only pray they have seen To Love Ru or Seikon no Qwaser.
