I’m starting to think this show has a chance.

Here’s a fun fact for you: with the exception of episode two, every single episode of Trinity Seven has featured frontal censorship to this point.
Now normally I wouldn’t make too big a deal of this as censorship itself is less important than the context of the anime. The Trinity Seven manga has been staunchly non-nude to this point, and the production company has not done nudity very often: with the last such occurrence being three and a half years ago. The exalted anime studio SHAFT has done nudity more recently than that.
But watching these episodes, I’m starting to get a serious Rail Wars! kind of vibe. Rail Wars! had the semi-innocent feel of a non-nude show for the most part, but then it would have these highly exploitative shots that didn’t make a lick of sense without the nipples added in. Like this one.
It was reasonable to have suspicions as the series rolled along, and before the end the series would actively end speculation during an actual TV broadcast.
Watching episode five of Trinity Seven , there were no shortage of censored frontal shots. Nothing that couldn’t remain censored on BD without being a full on tragedy, until this happened:
Seriously, what the fuck are we supposed to be looking at here? It’s one thing to tease us with blank boobs that never fill out, but this shot is completely out of place as is. This shot ONLY makes sense if a nipple is added.
That’s not to say that I think this show will be a Ikkitousen type tit-fest when it hits BD- I fully expect there to be missed opportunities. But like Rail Wars! this show seems likely to me to fit in a few strategically placed instances of frontal nudity.
At this point, anything less than an R-rating from this show will feel disappointing, and even a little surprising to me. Every season has a series that surprises with nudity. I think Trinity Seven has as good a chance as any to be the Fall season surprise candidate.
Of course, there’s still the pesky fact that the manga is non-nude, but the same could be said of Gokukoku no Brynhildr or Dakara Boku wa, H ga Dekinai , among quite a few others. Manga content may or may not be absolute, and anime companies will often have their own ideas.
As far as the anime goes, it’s fun! I like how the show is definitely steering towards a harem style, and there is a sleekness to this show that you normally see in a big hit anime. What you don’t see very often is a hit anime with quite this high of an ecchi level.
If there is one thing the ecchi genre desperately needs to see, it’s for nude service to make a return to casual anime like it’s no big thing. Like it used to be before things got more “specialized” in recent years. I think there is a sense in the industry right now that nudity is bad for sales, but that’s only part true. Push the right buttons, and anime will sell. Successful anime seeks something, an anime that tries for popularity through avoiding things is no lock for success.
