Several high school students and a school nurse band together. Shortly after a Zombie Outbreak. The group now attempts to figure who or what was responsible.
I usually write a short summary of the show covered but honestly who hasn’t heard of this show. In a nutshell take a George A. Romero flick or the Walking Dead or anything with the word Zombie. Imbue it with loads of Pantsu, Skimpy Clothing, and Large Bouncing Breasts, And you have Highschool of the Dead penned by Daisuke Sato and illustrated by the great Shouji Sato (The man behind multiple great H-Mangas and Triage X). A 12-episode anime adaptation, produced by Madhouse and covering the first four volumes, aired in Japan from July 5, 2010 to September 20, 2010. Madhouse also produced an original video animation titled Highschool of the Dead: Drifters of the Dead, which was released in 2011.
In true Zombie Flick Fashion, This show is at times brutally violent, this aspect doesn’t really mix that well with the whole Fanservice Side of the show. At one point you have skimpy clothed highschoolers flaunting their… ahem… assets. And seconds later you have mauled corpses and heads flying. In that sense it somewhat reminds me of shows like FREEZING! or Elfen Lied. Gruesome Violence and Ecchi don’t really mix that well. As for the girls they are very well designed. Tanaka Masayoshi designs stand out and have made this show one of the most iconic fanservice vehicles in years.
Changes in this Remake: The Original FC clocked in at around 15 Minutes and 2 Seconds, This new one stands at around 26 Minutes and 13 Seconds, Definitely giving a lot more time to properly showcase the service, One of the major changes was the removal of many service shots featuring undead characters. As some people pointed out seeing service of a zombie chick with her limbs missing, or covered in blood is more disturbing than appealing… I did however leave the scene that eclipses the OVA, Because that was gold. Also I reordered certain scenes in Episode 1, See Ep. 1 kicks off with the roof scene a scene that occurs somewhere near the end of that episode, So leaving it in and then having the FC kick back to the Pre-Zombie Outbreak feels pretty jarring. Lastly was the ED Sequence. Highschool of the Dead’s Endings were basically collages of various pictures. The imagery is pretty nice but most of them are barely visible. I actually realized that one of the Artbooks has a gallery showing off enlarged versions of said pictures. So I grabbed the scans and spread em out for the FC.
