Series finales tend to focus on story and action over fanservice. Not this time.
Better late than never, we finally get some nipple action from the main villain.
Our h(x)eroes are tricked and trapped in a room they can’t escape with their usual levels of power. There is only one solution- to unleash their bankai forms by having an orgy.
Since Kirara is a bit of a prude, they agree to do it in the dark. Thankfully the visibility is still decent in the “less censored” version.
There’s a summoned boss battle with a tentacle monster. Note the obvious foreground tentacle censorship that is certain to go away on BD:
Butt-shot of the year.
Overall Thoughts:
Last week’s penultimate episode was pretty light on service, and usually the final episode has even less service as it has the most lifting to do story-wise. The huge amount of service we got this week was a nice surprise (I’m not sure if there was another HxEros episode with more service than this one, actually).
The animation and art also had a nice rebound this week too.
Story-wise we get a pretty generic “i love you” ending between our two main characters. I did care slightly about their romance initially; but down the stretch their romance began to feel hollow and cliche. The side-characters ended up being more interesting- it’s a shame they didn’t get more screen time.
The story gets choppy too, as they seem to vaporize Chacha’s mom while uncle Anno just shows up again at the end with his sex-crime charges dropped suddenly and awkwardly. And then the show just ends. Even by ecchi standards, the conclusion to the story feels uneven.
Overall Series Thoughts:
This series tried to be a romantic comedy. A great romantic comedy will be both funny and emotionally involving. A good one might be one of those things. HxEros mostly flopped in the romance aspect, and didn’t even really try to be funny. By the end of the series Chacha was the only character I had any emotional connection too, and even her character wasn’t really given proper development or backstory.
Peter Grill also aired this season. Despite being effectively a low budget hentai, it was surprisingly enjoyable on an anime level. The voice actors really sold their performances. The situations Peter Grill gets put in are hilarious. I even bought into Peter Grill’s feelings for his betrothed Luvelia, despite the fact that he was ridiculously unfaithful to her. It just goes to show that just because an anime was made for fapping doesn’t mean it can’t also be a good watch.
Unfortunately ecchi shows that pull this off are pretty rare, and HxEros was not one of them. Feel free to skip this series and wait for the future compilation video (unless you want to financially support the series, which of course would be a good thing).
Fanservice-wise, I feel like a little too much of the TV series fanservice focused on Kirara and not the other girls, but hopefully the OVAs can fix that.
The best thing about this series, other than the very high amount of nudity and faithfulness to the manga, was that the art quality was very high almost entirely throughout. I’d say it’s between this series and Seven Mortal Sins for the title of the best looking ecchi anime since 2012’s To Love-Ru Darkness set the high water mark.
The voice acting was a highlight too, at least for the girl characters. Sayuri Yahagi (as Momoka) is always a treat, and Nichika Oomori was pitch perfect as Chacha.
Given that “by the book” nude ecchi manga adaptations consistently flop almost without exception over most of the past decade, I’m guessing this series probably won’t see a second season. And that’s fine I guess. There’s already enough in here for a pretty rockin’ compilation vid, especially after we get those two bonus OVAs as well.
We might not have another “compilation-worthy” ecchi anime for a little while, but at least the monthly BD releases and OVAs for this series will help make the wait for 2021’s World’s End Harem a little more tolerable.
