Fall 2017 ecchi preview: A mystical hot springs looms

It’s another quiet season, though one show has the potential to be among the year’s best for ecchi.

Notable ecchi anime this season

Shokugeki no Souma: San no Sara

J.C. Staff

Source material eroticism:  Non-nude service

The acclaimed food battle / ecchi series is back for a third helping.  Any nudity from this series would be a shocker, but it will still be worth worth watching for the entertainment value and casual service.

Dies Irae

ACGT

Source material eroticism:  unknown

Based on a light novel with a grizzly premise, expect plenty of R-rated content (of the violent kind).  Hard to say if nudity will ever be in the cards, but its worth noting that this series does not lack for well drawn characters and sexy girls wearing revealing outfits.  And maybe it’s just me, but the PV seems to give off just a bit of a Mirai Nikki / Big Order vibe.

Ousama Game The Animation

Seven

Source material eroticism:  Non-nude service

Originally a novel, this story would later be adapted into a TV movie as well as three manga iterations.  The manga were notable for having sexy content that tip toed right up to the line but never delivered.  Each new volume I thought would be the one to break the nipple barrier, but alas, it never happened.

That said, the content was sensual enough that having nudity in the anime wouldn’t feel the slightest bit out of bounds, and with Seven animating, it won’t be a huge surprise if liberties are taken.

Boku no Kanojo ga Majimesugiru Sho-bitch na Ken

Diomedea

Source material eroticism:  Non-nude service

My girlfriend is a faithful virgin bitch.  At least the title is fun.

The manga is the kind that leads readers along, thinking it will go from dirty jokes to full blown nudity at any moment, but sadly that moment never comes.  I’d assume the anime will be no different.

Garo: Vanishing Line

MAPPA

Source material eroticism:  unknown

The third season of this TV original anime.  The first season briefly showed the edge of a nipple back in 2014.  As far as I know, there’s been no nudity in this series since.

Glamorous Heroes

unknown studio

Source material eroticism:  None

Based on a Japanese MOBA game, the odds of any nudity here are extremely low.  Mostly I brought this series to everyone’s attention because of the outfits the heroines are wearing.

Inuyashiki

MAPPA

Source material eroticism:  Some nudity

It’s been thirteen years since the last time a Hiroya Oku manga was adapted into an anime, that being his most famous work: GANTZ.  Oku arguably pioneered the modern style of bizarre-horror manga, and his works are also well known for being quite salacious.  All of his manga have had nudity (which he draws exceptionally well) and Inuyashiki is no exception.

Unfortunately, whereas Oku’s previous manga were much more direct in their erotic intentions, female nudity only occurs a couple of times early in the Inuyashiki manga and even then, is intended to be disturbing, not sexy.  While I would guess that the nudity makes it into the anime, it’s minor enough that it wouldn’t shock me if it was cut completely.

Omiai Aite wa Oshiego, Tsuyoki na, Mondaiji

Seven

Source material eroticism:  Hentai

Here it is yet again, another short form ero-anime TV series for the third straight season- the second of which by Seven.  With the first episode already aired, we can already declare that at least one series this season will deliver.  I’m not huge into these kinds of hentai TV series personally, but given the dearth of ecchi in 2017, you have to give Seven credit for good timing.

Konohana Kitan

Lerche

Source material eroticism:  A ton of nudity

This series originally began under the name Konohanatei Kitan – it reached about eight chapters before it was put on hiatus due to the publishing magazine folding.  The author returned to the series in 2014 under the new name Konohana Kitan.  It is still running to this day and is presently at six volumes.

This manga is your classic case of moe slice of life with a healthy side of naked girls, similar to shows like Strike Witches, Centaur’s Worries, Unbreakable Machine Doll, Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou, and so on.  The setting is a hot springs hotel located between the world of the living and the spirit world, and the story focuses on the fox spirit girls who live and work there.

The Konohana Kitan manga takes full advantage of the cute girl cast and hot springs setting.  The initial eight chapter series had a bathing scene in every other chapter.  And while these scenes were initially modest, showing just the outlines of nipples, by the end there was a direct full frontal reveal.  And in the rebooted series, nipple sightings became very commonplace.  If adapted faithfully, it’s conceivably possible that a majority of episodes will contain at least one bath scene.

And there’s more good news, as this series is being adapted by Lerche, who had previously done a great job with two comparable series (Unbreakable Machine Doll, Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou).  Barring a letdown of epic proportions, you can pretty much pencil in this series as one of the year’s best ecchi anime, and maybe the best ecchi series in a couple years for loli fans.
