Momoka and Mirei reunite in Valkyrie Drive volume six

VD vol6 nylon cover

In what appears to be a fantasy by Momoka, she and Mirei are back together on intimate terms.

Images from nylon66 per usual.  He even did the caps in 1080p!

And so ends a highly imperfect experimental ecchi collaboration effort between two well intended big shots in the ecchi industry.

Hiraku Kaneko seems to be midway through an M. Night Shyamalan type of career arc by having immediate brilliant successes followed by a slow descent into embarrassing creative mediocrity.  It used to be that Kaneko’s quixotic obsession with breasts was his greatest strength, and maybe it still is, but the drawing style of the boobs of this series suffered from trying to be too creative, too ‘ideal’ in Kaneko’s mind, too exotic, and too weird.  Or maybe it could have been amazing, but simply didn’t have the budget.  Maybe collaboration throws him off his game, or maybe he’s in an experimental phase right now.

Though in all honesty, the real heartbreak of this series for me personally was how it never resembled the charming Senran Kagura franchise that Valkyrie Drive co-creator Kenichiro Takaki represents.  It sounds like Takaki was more involved with the game than the anime, but still, would have been nice if the girls were cute instead of homely looking.  There were a few good designs mixed in with the bad, but overall you’d be forgiven for not seeing Takaki’s influences at all.

Even with all that said, it sure would be nice if every season had a series like Valkyrie Drive.  A series that doesn’t even pretend to be about anything more than getting the audience to fap.  The execution may have been off, but at least the series had its heart in the right place.
