The official ShinmaiMaou twitter page has announced that a second season of the anime has been greenlit, which is slated to air in October of this year.
Additionally, a post-series bonus episode OVA is set for January of 2016. And don’t forget, there will be a bonus episode OVA that will be released this summer inbetween the seasons as well.
That means we can expect a minimum of 26 total Testament episodes, and probably 12 specials, over the next calendar year.
Obviously, Production IMS came to this decision before even seeing the official sales numbers, so we can safely assume their pre-orders have been very strong and that Amazon Stalkers’ glowing sales projections for ShinmaiMaou have been on the mark.
The second season will be titled Shinmai Maou no Testament BURST .
This is in my opinion some of the best news I’ve heard since I started this site. The ecchi side of the anime industry had been in a bit of a freefall the last couple years. Ecchi shows with frontal nudity had not only become less common, but rarely successful. The lack of success led to lower and lower production values, and there were no new hit shows appearing to replace faded ecchi greats from the past (Ikkitousen, etc).
Obviously, the popularity and sales power of a show is strongly tied to how good it looks, and for as much as I liked ShinmaiMaou , the art could be pretty bad at times. Shows that are made on such small budgets rarely sell.
The success of this show proved not only that ecchi wasn’t dead, but it proved that even shoestring budget anime can succeed if the content is good enough. This anime was an unlikely hit, but most definitely a deserving one.
Now if the second season could just get some production values going, this series could give DxD and To Love-Ru a worthy challenger.
