Thoughts on the anime
Anime directors are not only responsible for aesthetic feel of their projects, but they are also the most important person in terms of determining the look of characters’ body types and facial features: the basic “look” of the anime. Directors draw the key frames in each shot sequence while the rest of the staff imitates his work while filling out the rest.
ARMS is hardly a hotbed of anime directing talent, and even when they pull out the stops with high production values (Queen’s Blade), the bland character design touch of their directors always seems to hold them back. I don’t think it’s much of a coincidence that ARMS best looking anime project in a decade required bringing back some serious directorial muscle with Yasuomi Umetsu (Kite, Mezzo Forte). When a hentai director (albeit an awesome one) is the best talent you’ve had work on a project in ages, I think that says everything, really.
Rion Kujo directs this one. His artistic ability is the perfect definition of mediocre, with below average art in all three of his most notable directing jobs (s-CRY-ed, Hagure Yuusha, and Sekatsuyo). To his credit, all three of those series were guilty pleasure fun. s-CRY-ed was a cheesy shonen classic, Hagure Yuusha was good fun with quality fanservice and Sekatsuyo’s first blu-ray made me feel like Smilin’ Bob from those Enzyte commercials.
If there is one thing I hate about harem ecchi, it’s that the lead male lucky bastard is typically a nerd and a wimp who is 100% undeserving of his good fortune. Why should we root for a guy like that? No, I much prefer the Kintaro Oe brand of lead, a guy who is a man among men but when it comes down to it he’s still a perv like everyone else.
Hagure Yuusha’s lead, Akatsuki, is hardly the do-gooder that Oe was. I still enjoyed his character, if only because he is the perfect antithesis of Rito from To Love-Ru.
My only “complaint” is that having more nudity would have been nice. Light Novel adaptations are notoriously open for interpretation when it comes to nudity in ecchi, and ARMS has taken great liberties with nudity in the past (Queen’s Blade, even Ikkitousen).
Still, there was more than enough nudity to satisfy the dedicated ecchi fanbase… I’m really just splitting hairs here. I wish every anime season had a Hagure Yuusha.
Very impressive seiyuu cast for a throwaway ecchi series, by the way. You can accuse ARMS of skimping on art and character design, but they seem to always bring in the A-listers to voice their works.

Thoughts on the fanservice video
About a month or so ago, I was really hitting a wall here. Projects weren’t fun anymore, and worse yet, they weren’t sexy anymore. Things have gotten a lot better recently, thanks to High School DXD New, Sekatsuyo, To Love-Ru Darkness, and Hagure Yuusha among others. Lately there have been a lot of fun projects which turned out very nicely.
I think my very favorite thing to do in these videos is to loop quick nudity. Every now and then you get a jaw dropping boobage moment in shows like these, usually a shower scene or a close-up shot. These more intense nosebleed moments seemingly never last more than a second or two. Extending those to 10-20 seconds, or taking a scrolling shower scene and turning it into a stationary shot, that shit’s awesome. There were a few such moments in this project.
Lately I’ve kinda gotten lazy with OPs and EDs, just sticking them on the start and end without editing down or changing, even if the fanservice in them is minimal to non-existent. Hagure Yuusha’s ED had a couple of boob bounces but otherwise had nothing to offer. So I thought it would be fun to edit together a bit of a manga montage of the naked parts of the manga. I thought it turned out great. It’s an idea I’ve continued in the two projects that followed immediately after (Akaneiro ni Somaru Saka and Shuffle!).

Favorite Character
Akatsuki. He basically breaks all the rules of what an ecchi lead should be. Who knew rooting for a jerk could be so much fun? Nobuhiko Okamoto makes a good anti-hero, especially when he isn’t cracking his voice with maniacal screeching like he did playing Accelerator in Toaru Majutsu no Index.
Now, favorite character to look at? Myuu’s tits are incredible, but I found myself on Chikage watch for the most part.
