Kenja no Mago: Fanservice Review Episode 12 (END)

An action-packed ending.

Last episode of Kenja no Mago… ok we’re quite late for that.

In episode 11 finally the duel between whatshisname Shin and LexLuthorwannabe Schtrom seemed imminent. Too bad, it will not happen.

The action in this episode is frenetic, as usual they packed too much in a single episode. Starting with Sicily, in the cathedral of the half-wrecked city is basically casting all-heal on AoE on everyone that gets brought into the building.

Meanwhile down in the city Mira decided to have some fun, making humans explode and it doesn’t take long before she collides with various members of the Ultimate Magicians. Being the small fries they are, Mira is free to use basically all the group to mop the floor and they are saved only by Shin’s timely intervention. Shin’s battle with Mira is quite heated and ends with the demonoid retreating after understanding she’s just good enough to became a shish kebab on Shin’s sword.

(Well, this is surely a nice angle…) (If you are a Demonoid you can’t help but spewing loser’s lines.) (He literally shows up at half mile from the city just to say “Guys, let’s go home”.)

Then, comes the aftermath of the battle, with Shin finally visiting the first aid station where Sicily and others are still administering healing spells. Not much to add here, except that Sicily suddenly takes off her clothes to save a dying man and that he comes back to life afterward. (Ok, Shin may have casted some otherwordly magic in the meantime, but now Sicily is the one revered as a saint.)

(You can’t talk me out of it: I’m sure the magic that brought the man back to life was the magic of Sicily’s boobs.)

So, the Demonoids are on the run and the neighboring kingdom is saved. All that remains is to forge a strong political alliance and set up the seeds for a Season 2, where we will (or most probably, we will not) see the all-out war of the human kingdoms against the Demonoids that replaced the Empire.

(Aug is a lucky guy…) (These girls still have issues with big-boobed princesses.)

Also, for whatever reason Ellie and May will join this squad of troublemakers around the world in the hunt of Demonoid. (I’m pretty sure the king is just trying to kill his offspring and make the Kingdom go full republic.) Meanwhile the Demonoid plans some loser and evil scheme that will never work out ’cause they are small fries anyway. Oh, and apparently they are experimenting to make Mira pregnant.

(I’m not sure what they are doing to her, but they should’ve done it on-screen…) (An episode that ends with a close-up on Yuri’s ass, isn’t a bad episode.)

Ratings

Opening/Ending: 7 . The opening and ending are generically good. While the former is a pop music more on a lighter tone, the latter is j-rock in full swing. On the graphic side the opening is a bit more comedic while the ending a slightly serious approach, in line with the general shonen tone. Of the two I’d pick the ending.

Character Development: 5 . Can’t say much about it. Sure, Shin became a little less… dull… by the end of the show. But his development can be counted mostly on the “living-weapon” scale. The evil guys are basically cardboard cutouts (with the exception of Schtrom’s flashback, that wasn’t really on-spot). So paradoxically the more detailed and developed characters (but not really that much) are the secondary ones, Shin’s sidekicks.

Points of interest: 6 . Uhm… the plot, maybe? Well, jokes aside, Kenja no Mago got a solid plot with a lot of developments. Still the problem is that there’s just too much stuffed in a 12 episode anime. So much that it literally clogs the episodes with plot-twist and developments.

Illustrations: 6 . Average. On the graphic side Kenja is decent. The character design is more or less coherent but losing the edge in low-interest sections. Animations are on the same tone, while special effects (the spell-casting, mostly) tend to be on the good side. On the whole, though, it wasn’t one of the top players of the spring.

Fanservice: 6 . Ok, this is a bit complex. On the paper there a lot (I mean A LOT) of fanservice: cleavages, close-fitting dresses, spats and close-ups on every nock and cranny of the many girls of the series. But even with all that it just never get really interesting. Even the part in the onsen or on the beach are no more than ‘ok’.

Overall: 6 . Yet another anime that promises a lot in the first episodes and then develops averagely. There’s much we could say, but really the only thing is “they could’ve done better”.
