Thoughts on the anime
Many stylistic liberties (including the massive amounts of superfluous nudity) were taken to Tow Ubukata’s 2003 serial novel, but the plot pretty much remains intact. For better or worse (there is a very long and ultimately pointless casino scene late in the story).
There’s plenty of weirdness. A cast of villains includes a guy who’s literally made of boobies, and another guy named “pussyhand” who has an actual vagina grafted to his hand.
I don’t know if I would recommend Mardock Scramble for its story, but the animation is top notch (GoHands seemingly always brings their A-game), the action and visuals are terrific, and of course, there’s the ridiculous amount of nude fanservice that was added to the blu-ray editions (apparently the theatrical versions were completely without nudity).
I love Gohands. They can make pretty looking anime with the best of them, but aren’t too snooty to give us boobage at the same time. These guys could be big timers, but they’ll settle for being giddy pervs.
What a shock to see the lead role cast as Megumi Hayashibara. Once the biggest name in the seiyuu business during the anime industry’s biggest heyday (80s and 90s), she has played several roles that have served as mascots for anime. She’s also a great singer, something I really miss about her older animes where she got a lot of singing work.
When she voiced the very young Rune Balot she did so at age 45, having been mostly retired since the early 2000s, with the Evangelion remake films being her one recurring role. Here as Rune Balot she’s highly subdued, very similar to Rei from Neon Genesis Evangelion. Understandable and appropriate. That said, I always liked her best as her more boisterous characters like Lina Inverse.
She’s one of my all time favorites, and even if this is a weird reunion, I’m glad to see that even this late in her career she can still command a big role.

Thoughts on the fanservice video
It’s basically just as weird as the movie was. Might want to play some music over the audio. It is rather amazing to see how much naked stuff GoHands packed into three movies though. They certainly didn’t fuck around. It’s very rare to see nudity drawn this gratuitously with production levels this high.

It was pretty cool hearing Zoro’s voice in a villainous role (Shell Septinos).
