After two service free episodes, the third offering presents us with one of the many bathing scenes this eroge-inspired series is known for. Unfortunately, it shows little promise.
White Fox’s 2015 Utawarerumono sequel is in lockstep with the 2006 original, in both good ways, and bad. The art is good, the story is solid, and the atmosphere is pretty strong. It’s a little slow, but if you liked the original, you will probably like the 2015 version too.
The problem with the 2006 version was that it was non-nude despite being based on an eroge source. It always baffles me when X-rated material can’t even get a nipple in the anime, but that’s what the 2006 season did. Things were ‘made right’ by a 2009-2010 OVA follow-up that had nipples in the bathing scenes.
I figured there was a good chance that the 2015 version would avoid the nudity mistake of the 2006 show, but after seeing this, it’s looking bearish.
No steam, no foreground object censorship. Just magical hair coverage and conservative angles, just like you would see in a bajillion non-nude anime. We get an unfettered bare butt shot at the very end, although it’s like half the ass-crack is missing. The shot is literally half-assed.
White Fox showed they are capable of redrawing magical hair coverage and adding nipples with Jormundgand , and who knows, it could happen here too. But these days certain tactics seem to result in non-nude BDs very predictably, and these are textbook non-nude tactics.
Watching the series, it has a very strong Type-A feel just like the 2006 version did. I just don’t see much hope here, I think this is going to be one of those rare eroge adaptations that goes super tame to appeal to a mainstream audience.
The next episode trailer hints at another bath scene in episode four, I guess we’ll see what they do there. But right now, nudity for this series feels like a total long shot.
