Back in 2001, Mahoromatic was a game changer. At the time it was by far the most ecchi series to air on TV, but perhaps more amazing was that fans generally respected the series as an anime despite the unbelievable amount of nudity and service. The ecchi genre as a whole took off over the next half-decade, no doubt thanks to the (fully deserved) commercial success of this series.
In particular, Mahoromatic’s combination of otaku pandering elements was quite visionary and would be repeated with even greater success when Gonzo produced Strike Witches seven years later (Gonzo itself was initially founded many years prior by former GAINAX members, appropriately enough).
But more than that, this was a timeless GAINAX classic (also co-produced by the now mighty SHAFT) that just happened to have a ton of well animated bare boobs in it.

Thoughts on the anime
There aren’t a lot of nostalgic nude ecchi series out there, but Mahoromatic is one of the few. This was one of the last anime to have that 80s and 90s feel before the computer animation generation took over in the mid-oughts.
It just so happened that this anime was based on a manga with nudity (nudity is not the slightest bit rare in manga), and unlike most other TV series of the time, Mahoromatic made the bold choice to not only include the manga nudity, but even to expand upon it.
I always struggle with categorizing this series as true ecchi or not. This series would fare just fine if the nudity were removed, in fact I bet it would probably have received better reviews as a lot of anime fans are uncomfortable with exploitative nudity. It works as an action series, it works as a comedy, and with GAINAX and SHAFT animating, it was a bit of an anime classic just in a general sense.
That said, I glance at Mahoromatic’s strong sales and the fact that nude ecchi boomed in an unprecedented way in the years following this series’ profitable 2001-2002 run. However this show is classified, there is no question it opened the door for series like Popotan, Green Green, Girls Bravo, and Ikkitousen which aired in 2003 and 2004, as well as several other less iconic nude ecchi series from that time.
Oh who am I kidding? Of course Mahoromatic was ecchi. It was ecchi as fuck. Only one episode, I repeat one, in the first series was without nudity (episode 11). Season two backed off just slightly, then made up for it with a loaded “Summer special.” All told, this series provided thirteen and a half minutes of purified nude material. Tasteful or not, that’s a lot of nipples for a TV series, by far the most for a two cour TV series at the time. Back in those days nudity was almost exclusively the domain of home video. OVAs, movies, rare laserdisk editions which added nudity, and so on. But rarely did you see it in TV series, and when you did, it wasn’t this much this often.
Shows like these are part of what I miss about anime from those days. It just so happened that this classic decided to have a ton of boobs in it.
Off topic: Was it just me or was GAINAX working overtime to work in Evangelion visual cues with this series?
Thoughts on the fanservice video
I think this one turned out real nice. The nudity in this series is mostly of the innocent variety, but there is just so much of it and it is all well drawn.
Though it isn’t 1080p, it’s a very good quality blu-ray rip with good 720p quality. 1080p options existed, but had flawed encodes that were inferior to the best 720p options.
Since most of my source was at 29.97 FPS, and because lowering it to the usual 23.976 made it choppy as hell, I decided to just encode this video at the higher framerate. The two episode OVA finale was boosted artificially from 23.976 to 29.97, giving some faintly detectable ghosting frames, but it comes with the counter-benefit of looking freakishly smooth. Those two episodes only account for maybe 5% of the video anyway. The rest looks normal, and though I usually avoid higher framerates, I liked how this one turned out.
This version contains chapters while still being in mp4 format (thanks to reader np completion for the help there). So I’m back to mp4 files again, although next week’s video will be mkv unless I can master dual audio in an mp4 before this Sunday.
This show contains three ED sequences, each one pretty worthless. Chibi girls stand and wave as the credits roll by. So I spiced it up.
Saori Shikijo, of course! While her seiyuu wasn’t a perfect fit and she was obnoxious at times, she was still plenty hot and added an entertaining dynamic of female “competition” to the series. Though more involved for the affections of the protagonist, she was in many ways the prototype for the hot teacher/nurse types that would follow in ecchi anime ever since (Aki in Maken-Ki!, Urara in Seikon no Qwaser, Ryouko in To Love-Ru, etc).
Mahoro is a close second, and while her small breasted tsundere antics might have fit a Rie Kugimiya seiyuu type better, I thought Ayako Kawasumi gave one of her best performances here (and that is saying a lot), turning what could have been an annoying archetype into arguably the series’ most likable character.
