Fall 2014 ecchi preview: Eroge adaptations lead the way

trinity-seven

Disturbingly, this is the second straight season to lack a super-obvious service vehicle like High School DxD  or Ikkitousen.  On the plus side, this is a surprisingly deep season with a lot of realistic candidates for quality service.

Cross Ange: Tenshi to Ryuu no Rondo

Sunrise

An anime original mecha anime by Sunrise that features a mostly female cast wearing sexy outfits.  Sunrise has shown on many past occasions that they are not afraid of token amounts of nudity, particularly with their mecha anime efforts.

This anime is pretty to look at, with imaginative art and crisp character design.  Going the extra mile with fanservice would be gravy.

Daitoshokan no Hitsujikai

Hoods Entertainment

Based on a harem eroge set in a giant library.

Hoods Entertainment got their start with Aki Sora  and quickly made a name for themselves with Seikon no Qwaser  and  Manyuu Hikenchou.  Unfortunately, the company has trended away from nude TV series content the last three years (as far as I know), instead saving such efforts for contracted OVA works such as Rescue Me! , Kagaku na Yatsura , and Queen’s Blade – Vanquished Queens .

Will Daitoshokan no Hitsujikai  end a three year drought for Hoods and TV series nude content?  Given that it’s an eroge adaptation, I’d say the odds are good.

Girlfriend (Kari)

Silver Link

This at first glance you might think this is an eroge adaptation, but it’s actually based on a mobile phone game where the players get to have simulated girlfriends (sad I know).  Given that this is based on an innocent game that is presumably image conscious, I would give this anime about as much chance for nudity as say, Super Sonico .

The one reason for optimism is the presence of Silver Link, a company that has shown little fear of nude service the past two years.

Grisaia no Kajitsu

8-bit

Based on a no-nonsense eroge and a soft-porn manga spinoff (published in the now defunct Champion Red Ichigo), Grisaia no Kajitsu  is hands down the most promising show of the season for fanservice seekers.

There’s just one problem, it’s produced by 8-bit.  Nudity is a virtual lock here, but 8-bit always has a way of making nudity feel half-assed, no pun intended.

Expect this show to be a lot like 8-bit’s previous eroge adaptation, Walkure Romanze .

Inou-Battle wa Nichijou-kei no Naka de

Trigger

This seems to be a casual action series by the same studio that did Kill la Kill .  Fanservice seems like a good bet.  Nudity is pretty unlikely, but who knows.

Kiseijuu

Madhouse

Alien parasites snatch human bodies, with the side effect of transforming those bodies any way those aliens choose.  At one point, one of these unfortunate souls has his hand turned into a giant wang.  There’s some good nudity too, though you have to get through a lot of stomach churning weirdness to find it.

I’m a big fan of Madhouse.  It was Ninja Scroll  that got me into anime in the first place, and Death Note  is still my all time favorite.  But personal biases aside, I always respected that they have generally been willing to include nudity when the manga called for it, as evidenced by anime like Zetman , High School of the Dead , Black Lagoon , Claymore , Rizelmine , etc.

Madan no Ou to Vanadis

Satelight

The light novel and spinoff manga are very ecchi, but have so far been conservative on the nudity front, with the light novel teasing nipples every now and then with the manga occasionally doing the same.

Satelight is a respectable company that has only done nudity once before, for Muvluv .  Or twice, if you count the opening credits of BALDR FORCE EXE Resolution .

Satelight is no stranger to non-nude ecchi anime, so odds are this anime will be yet another one of those.  I hope to be wrong though, as it’s always fun to see a fantasy genre anime get first class service.  Personally, I think nudity would better serve the erotic intentions of the light novel, but past history suggests that Satelight will probably not go that far.

Ore, Twintails ni Narimasu.

Production IMS

Based on the light novel of the same name, this anime figures to be sexy and fun.  I see no reason to expect nudity, but it should be a fun series all the same, and there seems to be a series every season that comes out of nowhere with a surprise nude scene.

Psycho-Pass 2

Production I.G

As far as I know, there still hasn’t been nudity in this series, despite its decidedly adult themes.  I’m not expecting nudity in this go-around, but if it did go there, it would hardly be the first show to change content ratings from season to season.

Terra Formars

LIDEN FILMS

Similar to Kiseijuu , the Terra Formars  manga is premised around dangerous aliens (technically, super-evolved cockroaches), is full of disturbing imagery, and occasionally features nudity.  There’s a slight Gantz type of vibe to the manga; weird yet compelling.

Trinity Seven: 7-nin no Mahoutsukai

Seven Arcs

The manga is VERY sexy, though unfortunately it has remained non-nude through its first nine volumes.

Seven Arcs has done nudity before, most famously with Sekirei  and the Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha  movies.  This is a relatively new company without a ton of anime to judge them on, so it should be interesting to see if they take liberties here.  If they do, Trinity Seven  would easily be the ecchi show of the season, maybe the year.  The manga is loaded with potential.

Ushinawareta Mirai wo Motomete

feel.

This is the third eroge based anime to air this season, and it even seems to have a bit of a story to go with all the random sex.  The original story is supposedly inspired by a French novel and is set in the 21st century.  The synopsis of this anime almost reads like Another , and the cover art seems to give off the same vibe as well.  Should be interesting to watch this one, especially if it delivers with service.

It goes without saying feel. is no stranger to nude content in the past.

Rakuen Tsuihou: Expelled From Paradise

Toei

This anime original movie certainly doesn’t lack for sex appeal.  Toei’s long term aversion to nudity aside, this one could be worth keeping an eye on.

Ai Tenchi Muyo!

AIC

Ah, Tenchi Muyo .  This one time ecchi classic is back, sort of.  It’s being funded by Japanese cities as a way to generate tourism (smart, considering how cheap anime is compared to international advertising).  Given that the anime has commercial intentions and is limited to 5 minute episodes (albeit 50 of them), it’s unlikely this series will show much skin.  But it could be worth a follow for the Tenchi Muyo  diehards out there.

IS: World Purge-hen

8-bit (?)

The second season of Infinite Stratos  hinted at a follow up OVA.  It’s was originally slated for November.  Barring the announcement of yet another OVA, I plan to begin work on a two season IS compilation video once this OVA becomes available.

Strike Witches Operation Victory Arrow

Silver Link

Some day, probably about a year or so from now, we’ll get to enjoy a third season of Strike Witches .  To hold us over until then, Silver Link is releasing a three episode OVA that is related to the Strike Witches  movies.  The first of those OVA is set to come out this Fall.

It’s worth noting that the movies were non-nude, and since this OVA is related to those movies and will air in theaters, the odds of having nudity are somewhat reduced.

That said, this OVA is listed as having “mild nudity” over at Myanimelist, and they are usually pretty accurate with their content ratings.
