The final episode of the TV series. There is a ton of censored nudity in this episode, though unfortunately it is all of the combat variety.
When the last episode of a show like this airs, usually I just want to see the last battle resolved as quickly as possible so that the anime can squeeze in one last nudey romp in a bathhouse or changing room or whatever. Unfortunately, the last battle in Isuca goes on and on and on, and we are denied a send off cheesecake scene.
To compensate, ARMS jammed in a ridiculous amount of convenient clothing damage to meet their titty quota. I’m generally not a huge fan of combat nudity since it’s usually drawn hastily by inbetweeners, and it’s usually far away, and it typically isn’t on the screen for very long. I don’t love it, but shoot, I’ll take it.
ARMS is usually minimalist with BD changes that take more effort than shutting a white or black cloud off. The first Isuca BD proved to be a bit of an exception though as many minor redraws were made.
I’m mentioning this because there have been a lot of apparent screen crops in this series and in this episode in particular. At one point, a nipple can be faintly seen at the bottom of the screen. So as much nudity as there was in this episode, there’s probably quite a bit more that was hidden by screen cropping.
Final thoughts on the anime:
Overall, this series was a disappointment anime wise and even service wise. The Isuca manga is basically To Love-Ru lite in terms of its art quality and massive amount of playful nudity. Really, this one was set on a platter for ARMS, but instead of taking the obvious route, they turned this into an ugly action anime with a piecemeal plot that feels like a long introduction to a series that is very unlikely to ever see a second season.
Granted, there is still one OVA episode of this anime left, and I think everyone expects it to be service heavy. And that will help, but it won’t change the fact that this anime wasn’t even close to reaching its potential for both type-A and type-B fans.
I’m reminded a bit of Gokukoku no Brynhildr , in that the source material was very strong but the anime execution was mostly terrible. That’s basically two times in a row that ARMS had a gift wrapped success and basically blew it. At this point, I think the biggest problem ARMS has is that their staff just doesn’t have enough talent.
I think ARMS probably thinks the same, because their next project is bringing in some pretty big names, including Hiraku Kaneko. Fixing ARMS’ problems probably won’t be that simple, but it’s a step in the right direction.
In the meantime, I have to marvel at ARMS ability to survive with such poor sales. It’s likely that their past two anime were at least co-sponsored by the publishers of the manga they were adapting, which obviously helps. I’m sure these guys know what they need to do to survive. It does suck though seeing what was only a few years ago the biggest ecchi company in existence being reduced to life on food stamps.
At this point, ARMS might as well do another season of Ikkitousen , Queen’s Blade , or Samurai Girls . Sales in the 2-3k range would be disappointing for those shows, but they’d be huge successes compared to the kind of sales ARMS has had with their other shows lately.
Though ARMS is pretty bad at making anime, I love their dedication to soft erotica. Isuca may have been botched in just about every way possible, but at least they gave us some boobs to look at on BD. They have been struggling mightily with their craft as of late, but I hope they find success in the future.
In other news, I’ve re-upped all the fanservice compilations from B to F.
